Butt Hill is situated to the North of Hilton Lane, near it's junction with Bury New Road. It was once the archery field for Prestwich (the target for archery is called a butt). The land (along with

was purchased by Mr John Hope, one of the main tennants in the Manor of Prestwich, in 1777 when the Manor was divided up by
Thomas William Coke,
Industrialist the then lord of the Manor, who preferred to concentrate his efforts on his estate in Norfolk(

John built his house here in 1778, in 1820 this was conveyed to Mr J.A. Clegg of Whitefield. The location is now covered in 1930's housing development.
