Grimshaw is a family name that has long been associated with Prestwich. In 1852 the Grimshaw family boasted of being in the service of the Church for 200 years. Their occupation being indicated by the payment by the Church to George Grimshaw for a new coat. George was the Church "bobber", it was his job to go around the church with a long rod with a cloth end, waking sleeping parishioners. The Heys (see names ) were also known as Grimshaws until the early part of the 20th Century.
The Grimshaw of modern days is associated with a garage on the corner of Fairfax Lane and Bury New Road.
The bury New road garage, with Fairfax Road to the top left. After 80 years, this garage has now made way for a new Marks & Spencer food hall, part of the re-generation of the Prestwich "village" area. The garage has relocated outside of Prestwich.
