Outwood

Outwood Lodge

Outwood is an area of Philips Park - also overlooking North Wood. It probably gets it's name from it's loft perch, from where it was possible to view up the Irwell valley to an area known as Outwood (between Ringley and Stand). Robert Philips son, Mark, built a large house in this area, designed by Johnson of Litchfield and called it Outwood lodge. This house stood until the 1890's when it was demolished and parts of it used to build the North Lodge.

North Lodge

Mark Philips was a leading political figure, one of the first two M.P.'s for Manchester after the 1832 Reform Bill. He was responsible for a Bill authorising local councils to levy a penny rate for purchse and maintenance of public parks. As a result a
park in Manchester was named after him.
