Stuarts
1603 - 1714

1605 saw a great plague strike the population of Manchester, killing one sixth of the population. This is though to be the time that Butterstile Lane gained it's name. Being the main route from Prestwich to Manchester at the time, the residents left their butter on a stile on the lane, the merchants from Manchester leaving their payment in a bucket of water beside the stile - thus avoiding direct contact.  A more likely explanation is it being the location of a stile leading to Butt Hill giving Butt-hill-stile.

In 1613 the manor of Prestwich passed from the Reddish family to Sir Edward Coke (see Middle ages ) , chief justice of England, who presided over the trial of the Gunpowder Plot.

In 1630 John Lever Esq. bought the Southern Chapel (formerly the Langley Chantry) in St Marys which is still known today as the Lever Chapel.

1647 saw a John Fletcher of Prestwich petition the quarter sessions at Manchester for "sume place and timber in Pilkington, where he may live with his wife and children". John had been shot thorugh the left arm and right shoulder whilst serving as a Parliamentary soldier. (ref History of Lancashire, J.J.Bagley ISBN 85033 246)

In 1659 Robert Diggle was first mentioned as possessing a farm (Diggle Fold) which his family maintained for over 150 years, until 1810 when John Diggle died. The farm remained (on Lowther Road) until demolition 1969.

In 1666 a William Holland inherited the estate of Heton (later to be spelt Heaton) which is to the East of the original Prestwich township. William was buried at Prestwich in 1682. His daughter Elizabeth inherited the estate upon the death of her brother Edward, and was married to Sir John Egerton from which point the Egerton family were based at Heaton Hall though the Hall was actually a house then, the Hall as we know it being built in 1777.

In 1678 Prestwich contributed over £10 towards the rebuilding of St Pauls, after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Amongst the contributors were :-

William Holland (Heaton Hall)
William Wilson (Poppithorn)
Mary Wilson (Poppithorn)
Abdie Schofield
Jonathan Tonge ( Tonge Hall)
Margaret Seargant (Stand)
James Colbourne (Whitefield)
